Mammograms causing breast cancer?
A report published in November 08 (Journal of the American Medical Association's Archives of Internal Medicine (Arch Intern Med. 2008;168[21]:2302-2303) ) concluded what many naturopaths and alternative health practitioners have been flagging for years - the much lauded breast cancer screenings may not be helping reduce the incidence of breast cancer.
It is unknown at this stage if having your breast squeezed between two plates and then zapped with x-rays, may actually be more part of the problem than part of the cure.
In the study of 120,000 women, rates of breast cancer among women who were regularly screened were far higher than the rates in similarly aged women screened after six years. This says one of two things: that there may have been many breast cancers that simply went away, that healed themselves, in which case the mass mammogram screenings may create unnecessary fuss and fear; or, the mammograms themselves are increasing the incidence of cancers.
